How to Teach Beethoven's Sonatina in F Major

Today we’re talking about how to teach the first movement of the Sonatina in F Major Anh.5, No.2 by Ludwig van Beethoven. This is a fast, fun, mid-intermediate sonatina movement that can teach students a lot about Beethoven’s style.

Skills and Knowledge Required to play this piece well:

  • F Major key signature

  • 2/4 time signature

  • Sonata-allegro form, with two alteration

  • Articulation: 2-note slurs, lifts after longer slurs

  • Imitative writing in development

  • Scales can be problematic - m.14-16 vs m.57-58

  • Quickly changing dynamics

  • Steady tempo
