How to Teach Haydn Sonata in F

Today we’re talking about how to teach the first movement of Haydn’s Sonata in F Major Hob.XVI:23. This is a fantastic example of a well-crafted sonata movement for early advanced students and is great preparation for advanced works by not only Haydn but also Beethoven.

Listening to recordings: I find excellent recordings of Haydn to be difficult. I’ll offer two here that I found helpful for this particular movement.

The first is performed by Jenő Jandó, and I’m including it because you can hear the trill at m.105 very clearly, approaching from the B below.

The second is performed by Vladimir Horowitz and is beautiful and sparkly. However, note that I do not believe early-advanced students need to play as fast as Horowitz does!
