How To Teach Kabalevsky Sonatina in A Minor

Today we’re talking about how to teach the Sonatina in A Minor Op.27, No.18 by Dmitri Kabalevsky. This piece comes from the set titled Thirty Pieces for Children, and it is an excellent teaching piece that easily engages a student’s imagination. It’s also a wonderful etude for working on dotted rhythms.

  • A minor key signature

  • Numerous accidentals

  • Dotted and double dotted rhythms in common time

  • Triads and inversions, chord movement by half and whole steps

  • Articulation markings from the composer, including varied articulations between the hands

  • Dynamics, including subito p and a soft ending

  • Imagination and story telling necessary for playing a sonata form movement
