How To Teach Mozart's Sonata K.545

Today in our How To Teach Intermediate Piano Repertoire series we are looking at another late intermediate student favorite - Sonata in C Major, K.545 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This is one of the most recognized pieces in the piano literature and one that often seems easier than it is.

 

Skills required to play the first movement of this Sonata well:

  • Scale patterns in C and related keys, generally fast finger work and technical challenges

  • Alberti bass, 4-note broken chords, other patterns in left hand

  • Broken inverted chords in right hand

  • Long trills

  • Balance of busy left hand with right hand melody

  • Steady tempo throughout

  • Beautiful phrasing

  • Elusive quality of refinement or elegance which is difficult for younger students or students with less developed technique
