How To Teach Musette in D Major

Today in our How To Teach Intermediate Piano Repertoire series we are looking at the Musette in D Major BWV Anh.126 from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. This is one of the most fun Baroque-era pieces to play at the early intermediate level.

Skills and Knowledge Required to play this Musette well:

  • D Major key signature

  • Basic I and V in D Major

  • Bouncing octaves in LH

  • Jump from D “outer” position out to D “inner” position

  • Articulation is not marked in urtext editions and should be decided as an expressive choice. More info on Baroque articulation can be found in this post.

  • Dynamics are not marked in urtext editions - where does the excitement build?
