How To Teach Bach Invention No.14

Today in our How To Teach Intermediate Piano Repertoire series we are looking at Bach’s Invention No.14 in B-flat Major. I prefer to use this one as a student’s second invention, after learning either No.1 in C Major or No.8 in F Major.

Skills and Knowledge Required to play this Invention well:

  • B-flat Major key signature, scale, and chords

  • 4/4 time but with subdivision to the 32nd note

  • The main theme is simply an outline of chord, with a fun “interruption” in the last iteration in the right hand

  • A few articulation choices, including the release of quarter notes

  • (Note that this piece does NOT include any ornaments!)
