How To Teach Beethoven Sonata Op.49, No.2

Today we’re talking about how to teach the first movement of the Sonata in G Major Op.49, No.2 by Ludwig van Beethoven. This is a “light” sonata with a bright, happy feel. Skills and knowledge required to play the A section well:

  • G Major key signature and basic chords / harmonic content

  • G Major scale patterns and broken chords

  • Sonata-allegro form: unlike other Beethoven, development is very short - only 14 measures

  • Duple and triple eighth note divisions

  • Articulation, particularly 2-note slurs

  • Beautiful phrasing

  • Effective alance between the hands

  • Ability to hold a steady tempo, even with contrasting thematic material and dynamics
