How To Teach Beethoven Sonata Op.49, No.2
Today we’re talking about how to teach the first movement of the Sonata in G Major Op.49, No.2 by Ludwig van Beethoven. This is a “light” sonata with a bright, happy feel. Skills and knowledge required to play the A section well:
G Major key signature and basic chords / harmonic content
G Major scale patterns and broken chords
Sonata-allegro form: unlike other Beethoven, development is very short - only 14 measures
Duple and triple eighth note divisions
Articulation, particularly 2-note slurs
Beautiful phrasing
Effective alance between the hands
Ability to hold a steady tempo, even with contrasting thematic material and dynamics
